BI Specialist - Tableau (Closed)

The Business Intelligence (BI) Specialist (Tableau) will be supporting SSA’s enterprise BI Tools efforts. SSA has implemented WebFOCUS and Tableau to support various BI and reporting needs across the Agency. The BI Specialist will work within the Office of System Architecture (OSA), Division of Business Intelligence and Data (DBID) to provide analytical, testing, training and end user support for Tableau. Specific responsibilities include:

Must have

  • Evaluating user needs, documenting those needs as requirements, and collaborating with the technical team to ensure those needs are being met to the extent possible.
  • Understanding and implementation experience of Tableau concepts like Metrics vs Dimensions, Continuous vs Discrete fields, Extract vs live connections, Relationships vs Joins, Quick Tableau Calculations, Level of Detail Calculations, Viz in a Tooltip, when to use which chart/visualization, Explain Data, Ask Data, Lenses, Groups, Sets, Bins, Hierarchies, Parameters, Filters and Dashboard Actions.
  • Should be a hands-on senior Tableau developer with a flair for visual storytelling to develop insightful, intuitive, feature rich dashboards with best practice.
  • Experience scheduling extracts subscriptions on Tableau Server
  • Should have expertise in Tableau development, Optimizing SQL, data preparation, Data Profiling and SQL.
  • Create/Manage Sites, Folders, Sub-folders, Groups, Workbooks and Projects, Database Views, Data Sources, and Data connections in Tableau Server
  • Conducting validation testing and supporting User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for Tableau version upgrade activities.
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Tableau by providing tool expertise in support of end user needs, including content migration and troubleshooting issues.
  • Support end user training efforts by developing training materials, delivering training sessions, creating and updating Knowledge Library documents and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), and developing other “how-to” training materials as needed.
  • Knowledge of Tableau Prep.
  • Good communication skills and team player.

Nice to have

  • Assist with development, maintenance and delivery of processes/procedures, best practices, and technical guidance.
  • Experience Integrate Tableau with other applications/services, embed using the Tableau API.
  • Experience in creating Tableau automation scripts using Python, Shell, NodeJS, AngularJS or any other scripting tool
  • Knowledge of TabPy is a plus
  • Experience in Tableau Server Installation, management, performance optimization, troubleshooting and remediation is a plus.
  • Preferably a member of TUG and having a Tableau related blog is a plus
  • Tableau Certification is a Plus

Basic Qualifications:

Minimum knowledge, skills, abilities needed.

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 7 years of relevant work experience; Master’s Degree and 5 years of relevant experience; or a minimum of 11 years of relevant work experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working on BI development projects creating workbooks, worksheet, story, data sources using Tableau.
  • Minimum of 2 years of Tableau Server experience publishing reports on the Tableau Server to share it with the project.
  • Minimum 1 year experience Tableau Site Administration experience creating Projects, managing user groups, configuring permissions.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with relational databases such as Greenplum, DB2, Oracle and SQL Server including hands on experience with developing SQL queries.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience supporting validation activities including documenting test plans and test scenarios, identifying/creating test data, executing test cases/test scenarios, and identifying/documenting defects.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with stakeholders and end users to elicit and document business, functional and technical requirements.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience providing direct end user support to provide guidance and expertise for using reporting tools, troubleshooting issues, and developing user guides and training materials.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical topics to management and non-technical audiences through formal training sessions, as well as interface with the customer on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a US Public Trust clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with these skills will be given preferential consideration.

  • Experience with Tableau.
  • Experience supporting version upgrades of reporting tools.
  • In-depth understanding of Business Intelligence solutions (statistics, graphics, complex reporting)
  • Ability to quickly understand government specific architectures, existing and proposed, and provide/propose solutions for technical problems.
  • Self-starter, highly motivated individual, and a team player who adapts to a dynamic work environment.
  • Prior SSA or Federal government experience.
